The Sony Cyber-shot W170
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 review - all researched so you don't have to.
The new offering from Sony is the Sony Cyber-shot W170 with its 10.1 megapixel sensor
and a 2.7 inch LCD screen with eye level optical viewfinder.
It also sports a Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom lens with wide angle
view, 28mm - 140mm and 30mm - 150mm, plus SteadyShot Image Stabilisation, Face Detection AF technology and D-Range Optimiser
and Smile Shutter to name but a few.
It'll make the toast too! (well almost)
Smile Shutter mode automatically takes the shot when the subject smiles, no need to press the shutter. You
can even set the camera to capture an adults or a child's face. The Face Detection has been improved and similarly to
the smile detection, you can select 'adult priority' or 'child priority' and the camera will then detect up to 8 faces in
the frame and automatically optimise the settings accordingly such as, exposure, flash control and white
balance.
Good in the dark
The Sony Cyber-shot W170 also offers an improved auto-focus which includes macro ranges; Sony's D-Range
Optimiser - a very handy feature which retrieves otherwise lost image details in photos with dark shadows or that are over
exposed.

Feeling wobbly?
Also improved is the Super SteadyShot Image Stabilisation, in-camera editing like 'unsharp mask' that clears and
sharpens images and high sensitivity settings up to ISO 3200.
Scene but not heard
Other intelligent and automatic settings in the W170 include a new intelligent scene recognition technology
(iSCN). The camera automatically selects the optimal scene mode covering a range of shooting
conditions.
Double trouble
The Advanced iSCN mode allows the W170 to shoot based on the users settings - so one is very much auto and the other more manual. And,
if the camera detects that another setting would give better results then it automatically shoots another photo with its
preferred settings in play. So you will have 2 images to select from!
No more lost pics
The Sony Cyber-shot W170 also comes with a handy advanced image management function. You can search for
photos by smile and date. You can also view photos by date or calendar view and store them in a 'favorites' for
easy retrieval later.
Champagne?
This Cybershot comes in 4 colours - silver, black, red and champagne. Personally I prefer the silver or the
black. The red option is certainly more attractive than the 'champagne' one!
It is supplied with a NP-BG1 Lithium-ion battery, A/V and USB multi-connector cables, BC-CSG charger, software CD
ROM and a wrist strap.
Scratch-proof
The Sony Cybershot W170 has a Carl Zeiss 5x 5-25mm (equivalent to 28-140mm) zoom lens. The maximum
aperture is f3.3 wide. The lens retracts flush to the body so it's nice and neat and naturally protected by an in-built
shutter.
Slidin' away
The slideshow function has been improved and you can now go to playback mode and choose advanced filtering
options. The slideshows have different fades, wipes and pans and the background music is more varied with more tracks
to choose from as well as multiple and longer tracks for longer slideshows.
HD-ready
You can also view your images in 1080 high-definition resolution by connecting to compatible HDTVs using Sony's HD
Cyber-Shot Station cradle or HD component cable. Neither of these are supplied with the camera and need to be bought
separately.
Sounds good!
It has a low-light AF-assist lamp and the 9 Area Multi Point contrast detection auto focus system has a range of 3.9 inches
(10cm)-infinity at wide angle or 19.7 inches (50cm)-infinity at telephoto.
Focus Pocus
There are a variety of modes in the flash like: Forced On and forced Off, Auto, and Slow Sync plus Red eye
reduction. There is an optical viewfinder with this Cyber-shot and it gives about 80% frame coverage. There are
2 LEDs that let you know you the focus and flash status.
The 2.7 inch colour LDC screen boasts 230,000 pixels and you can review and preview your images as well as access
the menu system.
Love's gone behind
There is a range of manual controls on the rear panel: Zoom lens control for Telephoto and Wide settings plus when
in review mode you can choose from Magnify and Index. The Mode dial accesses Auto, Movie, Program AE, Landscape, Soft
Snap, Easy Shooting, High ISO, Twilight Portrait, SCN and Smile Shutter.
A La Carte
Via the Menu button you can access the LCD menu list. The Home button accesses the home menu and gives
options for shooting mode, settings, slideshow, print and playback mode plus others.

In control
The 4-way controller navigates through the menus, selecting playback photos and changing your settings.
The button in the centre allows the menu selections. When you are in Record mode, 4-way buttons control various
options:
Left of for Macro focus mode and right changes the flash modes.
Up turns the LCD screen on and off as well as controlling the amount of information and the down button activates
the self-timer. The Playback Mode and slideshow buttons are also featured here.
Get enough memory
This camera has 15MB of internal memory and an optional Memory Stick Duo PRO and Memory Stick Duo Cards up to
16GB and it is recommended to buy this along with your camera. The PRO is recommended for shooting movies.
Get yourself connected
At the bottom of the camera you will find the Multi connector I/O port and this provides an A/V output when
connected to the supplied cable. The video is PAL or NTSC and audio is monaural).
The USB 2.0 is PictBridge and high speed compatible. When using the HD component cable or Sony's HD Cyber
shot Station Cradle this W170 can output 1080 HD resolution to an HDTV.
Assault and Battery
The Sony Lithium-Ion NP-BG1 3.6V, 3.4Wh (960 mAh) battery pack powers this Sony Cyber-shot W170 and can capture up
to 390 images using the LCD or 460 with it turned off.
Conclusion
So all in all this Cyber-shot W170 packs a punch and is a great compact camera whether you are a beginner or a more advanced
user. It has a good user interface; lots of options and good burst mode.
I hope this review was helpful for you.
