The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd
The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd review - all researched so you don't have
to.
This attractive, compact camera has a whole host of controls and features easy enough for the beginner and
advanced enough for the more experienced photographer. It features Face Detection, intelligent preset Scene modes and
Image Stabilisation to name but a few.
This Fujifilm has a maximum ISO of 12,800, a smart Face Detection system which recognises faces positioned at odd
angles, a Dynamic Range adjustment and Scene modes plus Dual Image Stabilisation. It also features IrSimple wireless
connectivity - a rarity in cameras in this range.
Even though the F100fd has many advanced features the basic ones haven't been overlooked. It has a 12 megapixel CCD
enabling it to shoot very high resolution images that are sharp and clear with excellent exposure and colour. The 5x
optical zoom lens has a maximum wide angle to 28mm which is wider than normal on a camera in this range. There are both
Auto and Manual modes too.
Beginners Luck?
This FinePix is great for beginners due to its handy Scene modes like Portrait Enhancer and Night mode letting the
camera do all the hard work. Using the Manual option allows you to adjust the settings like exposure compensation,
white balance, metering mode, and ISO plus more.

F100fd.
How does it look?
Well, Fujifilm have created "Slim Arc" style where the camera body bows out a little in order to sit more
comfortably and be better gripped in the hand. This works in practise too and the FinePix is easy to use in one hand too, with
many of the controls accessible using one hand. There is a small raised part incorporated into the design which is
rather handy for your thumb to secure itself.
It's Wheely Good!
There is a Wheel Dial on the rear panel which can be rotated and pressed left, right and up and down. By
turning it you can access the LCD menu options. Most controls are accessed using the menu system with some accessible
outside such as, flash mode, Image Stabilisation, Face Detection, self-timer and macro mode. The rest of the modes
and options are found in the F100fd's Shooting or Function menus.
The Wheel dial controls an on-screen virtual dial which is activated by pressing the Menu/OK button.
Screen Shots
The LCD screen on this FinePix is large at 2.7 inches and bright too. You can boost its brightness even more
by using an option in the Setup menu. The surface is very reflective and tends to smudge a bit, but that's a minor
gripe really.
Modes and Controls
The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is well equipped with modes and controls to handle a wide range of shooting
conditions. It boasts Auto and Manual, 16 preset Scene modes and a range of exposure settings like ISO, Metering
options, EV compensation and white balance.
It is easy to access these as this Fujifilm has kept its menus and external controls nice and simple offering few
external controls and 2 LCD menus which are kept short. All exposure modes are accessed through the Menu/OK button
which is located in the Wheel Dial centre.
The virtual dial comes up on the LCD monitor and rotating the Wheel dial enables selection from the exposure modes
and Shooting menu. To access the Setup menu, press the Menu button and select Shooting menu and find the Setup option
from there.
Auto and Manual Modes
The Menu/OK button allows you access to other exposure modes in this FinePix F100fd. Auto and Manual are normal shooting modes. The Manual mode is more of a Program
AE mode really because this camera keeps control of shutter and aperture speed.
Playback Mode
The majority of the exposure tools like Dynamic Range, ISO, Colour, and Resolution can be found in the Function
menu. Image Stabilisation, Macro, Face Detection, Self timer and flash all have external controls.
When in Shooting mode you will see information regarding aperture settings and shutter speed. The Fujifilm
FinePix F100fd's Display button disables the information display and can activate a gridline display which separates the
area into thirds vertically and horizontally to assist with framing.
You can enable the Guide display through the Setup menu and this shows descriptions of the modes as you browse
through the options.
Scene Modes
This FinePix compact camera has 16 preset modes including Portrait and Portrait Enhancer, Natural Light, Natural
Light With Flash, Landscape, Night Fireworks, Sport, Sunset, Museum, Underwater, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Party, Text and
Flower modes. The Natural Light modes help to create better more natural looking images without the use of artificial
light or flash.
No need to face the face
There are some other special features worthy of mention in this F100fd. The Face Detection 3.0 detects faces at awkward angles, faces on moving subjects and can
recognise up to 10 faces in one frame. You can activate this feature by pressing a button on the rear panel. It
works with or without Redeye Removal.
Wireless for less
IrSimple technology is used for high-speed, wireless infrared connection to other devices which have
IrSimple. These include FujiFilm IrSimple photo booths, printers and other IrSimple enabled digital
cameras.
Wide Angle Lens
This Fujifilm FinePix F100fd has a 28mm max. wide angle lens setting. This assists you in tight spaces like
inside buildings for example. The 5x optical zoom lens is equivalent to a 28-140mm zoom on a 35mm camera and is of
excellent quality.
Battery and Storage
The F100fd uses a single, rechargeable lithium-ion battery and comes with both battery and charger.
Don't forget to carry around a spare battery just in case! A charged battery should last you about 230
photos.
The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd can be used with SD/SDHC and xD-Picure Cards memory cards. It is not supplied
with a card, but includes approximately 57MB of memory. 2GB is a good amount of extra memory to invest in, however, if
you plan to shoot movies, 4GB would be a better bet.
In conclusion
The Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is an easy-to-use camera and generally performs well. For the more advanced
features the manual will help you get to grips with things. If you can't find what you are looking for on the
external controls then it is likely you will find it through the Shooting or Function menus on the LCD.
Exposure and Colour are good and the modes such as Scene modes, Dynamic Range and Face Detection were very handy
and responsive in a range of shooting situations and conditions.
If you are a beginner or a more advanced DSLR user who wants a more portable option, this Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is well worth it.
I hope you have found this review useful and I wish you much success in your future photography!
