The Canon PowerShot
G9
The Canon PowerShot G9 Review - all researched so you don’t have to!
Scary!
This camera is kind of … well … serious looking! Frankly, it looks
like it could be bashed over the aperture with a tripod and still come back fighting fit! It’s matt black, brick-like and
mean looking! It means business and … I know this is going to sound boring
(yawn yawn) but it really will fit the bill for both beginners and advanced photographers. Here’s why …
Why do you want this camera?
Well, good question, and here’s why! If you are looking for a camera
that’s a bridge between one of those tiny, get-lost-in-your-bag point and shoots and a DSLR you may have found what you are
looking for in the Canon PowerShot G9.
The great news about this camera is that if you are a beginner or a more advanced user it enters both these
worlds. It makes you feel like a proper photographer, and not only that, it
will make you a better one too. It offers you full control over the quality of
your images and offers many advanced features which will satisfy most photographers needs. But also, the less experienced user can use Auto Mode obtaining excellent results
immediately whilst exploring the more advanced features of the G9 as your relationship progresses!
In Between
The Canon PowerShot G9 is a fantastic upgrade from any of the point and shoot cameras for those who don’t
quite want to take the plunge into the realm of DSLR. Also, for those who already
own a DSLR, the G9 offers a viable in-between alternative for those life situations where you don’t want to heave-ho your DSLR
camera around with you complete with lenses and kit bag! Lets face it, sometimes
a large camera is just impractical!
Still with me? Great!
Read on for an inspirational run down on the features of the Canon PowerShot G9 camera.
G9 vs G7
If you are familiar with the G9’s predecessor the G9 vs G7, you’ll know they look pretty much the
same. However, there have been some changes made underneath the black matt
finish of this Canon PowerShot. This camera is 12.1 megapixel and sports a
smaller optical viewfinder to make room for a larger 3-inch PureColor LCD screen, increased from the G7’s 2.5
inches. We also see the welcome return of RAW mode in the G9, which was
omitted in the G7 causing a bit of a consternation among Canon customers!
Zoom and stuff!
There is a 6X optical zoom lens
with a focal length of 35-210mm. There is also a flash hotshoe, and optical
viewfinder and an optical image stabilizer to help stop camera shake. Canon’s
DIGIC III image processor drives the camera, the same processor that is used for Canon’s SLR cameras. This helps to give better image processing and faster performance.
The movies are high resolution - 1024x768 at 15fps. There is a
My Colors mode which enables in-camera colour effects, improved Face Detection and a 1cm macro mode. There are 25 shooting modes which include Manual, Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority
and this give the user greater control over shooting.
Conclusion
So all in all this camera ticks all the right boxes for those who want a no messing, bridge camera that is small
enough to fit in a coat pocket or bag so as not too be noticed, and serious enough to take very good quality
photos. It will have you feeling like a pro in no time. And if you already are a DSLR pro, welcome to convenience without compromising
quality.
I wish you all the best in taking your first photographs with the Canon PowerShot G9 and I hope you enjoyed this
review.
